- How old is your dog, and how sudden was the change? A gradual shift over months points differently than a fear that appeared in a single week.
- Is there any limp, stiffness, or reluctance to jump — even subtle? Pain is one of the most missed drivers of new sound sensitivity.
- Does she seem to startle at sounds from unexpected directions, or miss cues she used to catch? That’s a hearing-change pattern, not a pure fear pattern.
- Any other new signs — house soiling, staring at walls, disrupted sleep, confusion in familiar rooms? Those belong on a cognitive-dysfunction checklist, not a behavior one.
- Has anything in the environment actually changed (new dog, new baby, a recent scary event)? Sometimes the trigger really is situational.

This is the one I push hardest. A dog with arthritis, a sore neck, or an aching hip is bracing for impact all day, and a loud, sudden noise reads as one more threat on top of a body that already hurts. A qualitative study on PMC (National Library of Medicine): noise sensitivities in dogs found that dogs with underlying musculoskeletal pain showed noise-reactive signs their owners hadn’t connected to pain at all — freezing, clinginess, reluctance to move toward the sound source. In TCVM terms, I think of this as a body out of balance protecting a weak point; in plain terms, a senior dog flinching at the vacuum might genuinely be flinching from her hips, not the noise itself. Cognitive change lowers the whole coping threshold
Canine cognitive dysfunction doesn’t create noise fear directly so much as it shrinks a dog’s overall capacity to cope with anything unpredictable. A dog whose sleep-wake cycle is disrupted, who gets disoriented in familiar rooms, or who’s started pacing at night is running on a thinner margin. Add a thunderstorm to that, and the reaction can look disproportionate — because it partly is.
