Here’s the fork: you’ve got a 9-pound Chihuahua and a 90-pound Mastiff, and the joint chew bag says “give half for small dogs.” That instruction is doing a lot of quiet, unexamined work — and in my experience, it’s wrong often enough to matter.

I’ve spent a lot of clinic hours weighing what a supplement can realistically do for a dog’s diet, mobility, and recovery, and body size keeps showing up as the variable that gets flattened into a single scoop-size chart when it shouldn’t be. But the reason large dogs need proportionally more isn’t just body mass — it’s force concentration. One of the dogs I worked with was a 7-year-old Labrador named Duke, 78 pounds, who’d started hesitating at the bottom of the porch steps every evening around dinnertime — not falling behind on walks, just pausing, weight-shifting, before committing to the first step. Weight-based CFU guides commonly land in the range of roughly 1 billion CFU per kilogram as a working baseline, scaling from a couple billion CFU daily for small dogs up toward 10–20 billion for giant breeds.

Where this gets practical: small dogs, especially toy and brachycephalic breeds, tend to run into acute GI upset — stress colitis, dietary indiscretion — more visibly and faster because there’s simply less digestive tract to buffer an insult. A NASC-certified product tells you the label is accurate and the facility follows quality standards — it doesn’t tell you the dose on that label was chosen with your specific dog’s joint stress or drug clearance in mind. I was reminded of this again with a 6-year-old Shih Tzu I saw for intermittent loose stool that flared every time her family traveled. She weighed 13 pounds, and the probiotic they’d been giving her was formulated and CFU-dosed for dogs up to 50 pounds, with instructions to “give as directed” regardless of size. Once we recalculated her actual CFU-per-kilogram intake, it was within a reasonable range — the product wasn’t the problem, the label’s vagueness was. That’s a pattern worth naming: for small dogs especially, the dosing math is often more informative than the ingredient panel.

So here’s my bottom line: don’t ask “does this supplement work for dogs” — ask “does this supplement’s dose make physiological sense for a dog this size, with this joint load, this metabolism, this gut volume.” Weigh what a supplement can realistically do for diet, mobility, and recovery against your specific dog’s actual size-driven risk profile, not the marketing bracket on the front of the bag.
