Omega-3 vs. Omega-6 for Dogs: Which One Actually Controls Inflammation

Stop asking whether omega-3 or omega-6 is “better.” That’s the wrong fork. Every commercial dog food already contains both — the question that actually predicts a dog’s inflammatory load is the ratio between them, and most kibble runs closer to 15 or 20 omega-6-to-omega-3 than the 2 to 5 range research groups have flagged as reasonable for a healthy adult dog. Read the label. Then read the bloodwork if you have it. The claim on the bag rarely matches either.
The Question Isn’t Omega-3 vs. Omega-6 — It’s the Ratio Between Them
Omega-6 fatty acids, mostly linoleic acid from poultry fat, corn, and soy, are precursors to pro-inflammatory eicosanoids — the signaling molecules that drive swelling, heat, and pain after an injury or in a joint that’s already breaking down. Dogs need some omega-6; it’s essential for skin barrier function and normal cell membranes. Omega-3s, specifically EPA and DHA from fish oil, compete for the same enzymatic pathway and get converted into eicosanoids that are far less inflammatory. Feed a diet stacked with omega-6 and thin on omega-3, and the pathway defaults toward inflammation. Feed enough EPA and DHA to shift that ratio, and the same pathway produces calmer signaling molecules instead. That’s the entire mechanism. It isn’t about eliminating omega-6 — it’s about diluting its dominance.

The same label-reading discipline applies whether you’re comparing prescription veterinary probiotics to over-the-counter versions or comparing fish oil brands — the active dose on the panel is the only number that matters.
A Second Case, Same Lesson From the Other Direction
Not every dog needs more omega-3. An eleven-year-old Golden Retriever mix, on a home-prepared raw diet heavy on chicken skin and duck fat, came in for a dull, greasy coat and intermittent loose stool — not joint pain at all. It’s a diet or supplement plan that brings the ratio down from the 15–20 range typical of standard commercial food toward something closer to 5 or lower, particularly for dogs already dealing with osteoarthritis, allergic dermatitis, or another inflammatory condition. That’s a conversation for a supplement’s label and a vet’s read on the individual dog — not a blanket “more omega-3 is always better” rule, especially since high-dose fish oil isn’t free of GI upset risk or platelet effects in dogs on other medications.

Reading the Label Before the Claim
Three things to actually check before buying a fish oil or omega-3 product: First, does the label list EPA and DHA milligrams separately, not just a vague “omega-3 fatty acids” total? Second, does the dose per serving come anywhere close to the 50–220 mg/kg range studied for therapeutic effect in dogs with joint disease, adjusted for your dog’s actual weight? Third, does the brand carry PetMD: NASC membership or an equivalent third-party quality mark, which requires the manufacturer to submit to random product testing verifying the label’s claims are accurate. A bottle that fails any of those three checks might still be a fine everyday supplement — it just isn’t the dose the research used, and it shouldn’t be marketed as if it is.
