Every senior-dog check-in should really answer two separate questions, not one:
- Is there too much or too little fat covering the ribs, waist, and base of the tail? That’s body condition score (BCS), scored 1 to 9.
- Is the muscle over the spine, shoulder blades, and hips thinning out? That’s muscle condition score (MCS), scored as normal, or mild, moderate, or severe loss.
- Has the dog’s weight on the scale actually changed? It often hasn’t — and that’s exactly the trap.
- Is there a chronic illness in the picture (kidney disease, heart disease, cancer)? If so, MCS matters more than BCS, full stop.
- Are you the one asking, or is the vet automatically doing both? A lot of routine exams still only log body weight and a body condition number.
